Reynolds Beal was born in 1866 in New York City. He began his career at Cornell University, studying naval architecture. He had a great interest in yachting and maritime subjects. He looked at William Merrit Chase’s Shinnecock Summer School. Gifford Beal, his younger brother, also traveled to Portugal, the Caribbean, and the West Coast. Reynolds Beal and his brother Gifford, an artist, finally settled in Rockport, Massachusetts. The Beals traveled up and down the east coast, painting marines and landscapes.
