Scene: abstractGarabed DerHohannesian (from http://www.garabedderhohannesian.com/biography.html) (1908 - 1992)Garabed Der Hohannesian was an acclaimed Boston artist of the abstract impressionist school. In addition to his painting, he was a professor of design at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1947 to 1973. He was a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art.His work was first shown at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1940 in a group showing with other artists from what was then termed as being of the school of “non-objective painters”. Subsequently and throughout his life, his work was exhibited in numerous venues in both solo and group settings throughout the United States.His paintings are included in many prestigious museums and private collections including the Carpenter Gallery of Art at Dartmouth College, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Addison Gallery of Art in Andover MA and the Boston Public Library. He was represented by both the Carl Seimbab Gallery and Margaret Brown Gallery in Boston, MA where he had several solo exhibits over the course of his career.Individual and group exhibits include the DeCordova Museum (Lincoln, MA), the Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston, MA), the Boston Society of Independent Artists, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum (New London, CT), the Museum of Modern Art (Yerevan, Armenia), the Rockport Art Association (Rockport, MA) the Boston Public Library (John D. Merriam collection) and several private galleries in the Boston area.His work appeared in numerous solo exhibitions including the Charles E. Smith Gallery (Boston, MA), the Copley Society (Boston, MA), the Providence Art Club (Providence, RI) as well as retrospective exhibits at the Rhode Island School of Design, Kantar Fine Arts (Newton, MA) and Wheaton College (Norton, MA) subsequent to his death.
