A self-taught artist, he specialized in colorful ship portraits in the folk art tradition. He was born in Gloucester, England 1830. He ran away and worked on a ship that his Uncle owned.
Raleigh has 22 pieces of art hanging in the New Bedford, Mass.
Enjoying a long and productive life, Raleigh died at the age of 95 in Bourne, Massachusetts, leaving a legacy of ship portraits showing the wind ships of his youth with great character and dignity for future generations.
